Naseptin® 0.1% & 0.5% w/w Nasal Cream

(Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride and neomycin sulphate)

Information for Patients

Please read this leaflet carefully before you start to use your medicine. It contains important information about Naseptin Nasal Cream.

What's in your medicine?

Naseptin contains chlorhexidine dihydrochloride 0.1% and neomycin sulphate 0.5% (3250 IU/g). It also contains the following inactive ingredients:

  • Medium-chain triglycerides, cetostearyl alcohol/ethylene oxide condensate, cetostearyl alcohol and water.

Naseptin comes in packs of 15g.

Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride is one of a group of medicines called disinfectants. Neomycin sulphate is one of a group of medicines called antibiotics. They work together in Naseptin to destroy bacteria.

What's this medicine used for?

Naseptin is given to treat and prevent infections caused by bacteria that occur within the nose.

Before you start your treatment

Tell your doctor if any of the following applies to you.

  • You have ever had a rash or other possible allergic reaction to chlorhexidine, neomycin, any related compounds, or to any of the other ingredients in Naseptin (these are listed in 'What's in your medicine?').
  • You are taking any other medicines (including those you have bought yourself). Some medicines can interfere with your treatment, so please check with your doctor or pharmacist before you take any medicines.
  • You suffer from problems with your kidneys or ears.

Other special warnings

  • If Naseptin is mixed with certain soaps, its action may be reduced. Do not use it immediately after washing your face.
  • Avoid getting Naseptin onto your clothes or other fabrics. If this happens, do not use hypochlorite bleaches to remove it, as brown stains may develop.

Important information about some of the ingredients of Naseptin

This product contains cetostearyl alcohol which may cause local skin reactions, for example contact dermatitis.

Treatment with Naseptin

Your doctor will decide when and how to treat you with Naseptin. It is only to be used inside your nose. Do not use it on your eyes or ears.

Place a small amount of the cream on the tip of your little finger and carefully apply inside one nostril. Repeat for the other nostril.

To avoid infections use twice a day.

To treat infections use four times a day. Treatment is usually for 10 days.

What to do if you use too much Naseptin

If you accidentally use too much cream, or someone else uses or swallows any of your medicine, you should tell your doctor at once or contact your nearest casualty department. Show any left-over medicines or the empty container to the doctor.

What to do if you miss a dose

If you forget to apply a dose, apply it as soon as possible, unless it is almost time to apply the next dose. DO NOT apply a double dose. Then go on as before.

Side effects

Naseptin sometimes causes allergic skin reactions (itching) in some people. Rarely, with long term use, there may be irritation of your nostril, hearing difficulties or kidney problems.

If they are severe or last for more than a few days, tell your doctor. If your medicine upsets you in any other way, tell your doctor.

Storing your medicine

The expiry date for this medicine may be found on the tube and carton labels. Do not use it after this date.

Do not store above 30°C. Keep the tube tightly closed. Keep the tube in the outer carton in order to protect from light and moisture.

Keep all medicines in a safe place where children cannot see or reach them. If your doctor decides to stop your treatment, return any unused medicine to the pharmacist. Only keep it if your doctor tells you to.
