This leaflet contains important information about your Lanoxin PG tablets.

What is in Lanoxin PG tablets?

Lanoxin PG tablets contain 0.0625mg (62.5 micrograms) of the active ingredient digoxin. They are blue, round and are marked with 'WELLCOME' and 'U3A'.

There are also some other ingredients in Lanoxin PG tablets. These are lactose monohydrate, maize starch, oxidised starch, rice starch, indigo carmine (E132), povidone and magnesium stearate.

Your Lanoxin PG tablets are supplied in bottles of 500 tablets.

What are Lanoxin PG tablets for?

Lanoxin PG belongs to a group of drugs called cardiac glycosides. These are used to treat certain heart conditions, such as heart failure, and certain irregularities of heart rhythm.

Is it all right for me to have Lanoxin PG tablets?

Lanoxin PG suits most people but a few people should not have it. Ask yourself these questions to check whether Lanoxin PG is right for you.

  • Have you ever had an allergy or bad reaction to Lanoxin PG, digoxin, digitoxin or any of the other ingredients listed above?
  • Are you currently taking or have you taken a cardiac glycoside in the past two weeks?
  • Are you taking or likely to be taking any of the following drugs whilst you are taking Lanoxin PG? (Please check with your doctor if you are not sure):
    • drugs used to treat stomach and bowel problems, including laxatives and those for indigestion, diarrhoea and vomiting
    • drugs used to treat disturbances in heart beat rhythm
    • drugs used to treat epilepsy
    • drugs used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension)
    • drugs used to treat adult diabetes, such as acarbose
    • drugs to help you lose body fluids (diuretics)
    • drugs used to treat cancer
    • drugs to lower your cholesterol (atorvastatin)
    • antidepressants (nefazodone)
    • cholestyramine
    • captopril
    • lithium
    • penicillamine
    • antibiotics
    • steroids
  • Do you suffer from kidney disease?
  • Do you suffer from a deficiency of potassium or magnesium in your blood?
  • Do you suffer from an excess of calcium in your blood?
  • Do you suffer from a thyroid disease?
  • Do you suffer from a severe lung disease?
  • Do you suffer from stomach or bowel problems?

If you answer "YES" to any question, tell your doctor.

Please also tell your doctor if:

  • you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breast-feeding.

Some heart disorders are not usually treated with Lanoxin PG, such as conditions called heart block, some heart arrhythmias and certain cases of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Your doctor should know if you have any of these. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.

During treatment with Lanoxin PG take special care when you drive or operate a machine. The herbal remedy St. John's wort (Hypercium perforatum), should not be taken, when taking Lanoxin PG.

If you already take St. John's, seek the advice of your doctor, as soon as possible, before stopping the St. John's wort preparations.

Important information about some of the ingredients of Lanoxin

This medicine contains lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, talk to your doctor before taking Lanoxin.

How do you take Lanoxin PG tablets?

The dosage is variable and it may be changed by your doctor. The first dose for adults and children over 10 years is between 0.75mg and 1.5mg as a single dose. For some patients e.g. the elderly, this dose may be given in divided doses 6 hours apart. Alternatively a starting dose between 0.25mg and 0.75mg may be given daily for a week. The starting dosages are then followed by a daily dose (maintenance dose), which will be decided upon by your doctor, depending on your response to Lanoxin.

This dose is usually 0.125mg to 0.75mg daily. Your response to Lanoxin PG will be monitored by your doctor and may involve blood tests. Elderly patients may receive a lower than usual dosage for adults and children over 10 years of age. The usual starting dose for children under 10 years is between 0.025mg and 0.045mg per kg of bodyweight over a 24 hour period. Depending on your child’s response to the medication the doctor will decide upon the most appropriate maintenance dose.

  • If you forget to take a dose tell your doctor. DO NOT DOUBLE YOUR NEXT DOSE.
  • If you take too much Lanoxin PG or if someone else takes your medicine by mistake, tell your doctor immediately.

Do Lanoxin PG tablets have side effects?

Lanoxin PG may cause side effects in some people.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following happen to you while you are taking Lanoxin PG.

  • If you feel sick, vomit, lose your appetite or suffer from diarrhoea or abdominal pains.
  • If you start feeling more ill while taking Lanoxin PG.
  • If you start to feel very tired, notice any muscle weakness, or if you get headaches, feel depressed or experience any mental disturbance.
  • If you feel dizzy or confused.
  • If your heart condition feels worse or you experience palpitations.
  • If you have any problems with your eyesight.
  • If you are a man and notice breast development.
  • If you notice any unexpected bruising, bleeding or skin rashes.

Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you notice any other side effects from your medicine which are not mentioned here.

Look after your Lanoxin PG tablets

  • Keep your Lanoxin PG tablets in a safe place where children cannot see or reach them.
    Do not store above 25°C.
  • Do not use after the 'use by' date on the pack.
  • If your doctor tells you to stop taking the tablets, please return any which are left over to your pharmacist. Only keep them if your doctor tells you to.
